A song for Chris Cousins.
Chris was a caring, attentive husband and father. He was a talented, hardworking journalist, dedicated to thoughtful storytelling, too. I’m sure Chris taught me everything I know about writing a stories with heart. I never sit down to write without thinking about how he would do it. He was my friend and I miss him, as does everyone who had the pleasure to know him.
Whether facing down a squirrelly politician, a looming deadline, a pond full of elusive fish or the hubbub of a Cub Scout campout, Chris always said the same thing: I am not afraid.
And he wasn’t.
I wrote this and then sang this at his funeral in 2014. Last fall, me and my dog, Goose, paddled out to one of our favorite river island’s and recorded it for my “Alone Beside the Road” video series. This one’s not exactly beside a road — but close enough.
